L&T wins a Rs 15,000 crore order from US cloud firm Together AI to build India's largest NVIDIA B300 AI factory in Chennai

14 Aug, 04:27 IST · Plays out over weeks · 4 sources

Larsen & Toubro, India's biggest engineering company, won an order worth up to Rs 15,000 crore from a US cloud firm to build and run India's largest artificial-intelligence computing site in Chennai - good for L&T and for the electrical and cooling equipment makers it will buy from, and bad for small Indian companies that already rent out AI computing power.

Key facts

What the reporting establishes, before any reading of it.

  • Order worth up to $1.57 billion (about Rs 15,000 crore) from US cloud platform Together AI
  • 10,000 NVIDIA B300 chips at L&T's Vyoma.AI unit on its Chennai campus - the largest such deployment in India
  • Marks L&T's entry into the AI factory business, a recurring-revenue vertical beyond its traditional engineering and construction work
  • The facility will support Together AI's cloud platform for AI inference, fine-tuning and training

How the news spreads

Step by step — from the first companies it hits to whole sectors.

Who it hits first

  • Larsen & Toubro wins an order worth up to Rs 15,000 crore (about $1.57 billion) from US cloud company Together AI to build and operate India's largest artificial-intelligence computing site - 10,000 NVIDIA B300 chips at its Chennai campus, run through its Vyoma.AI unit. For L&T this is not just another construction contract: it is the start of a new business where it earns ongoing rental income for hosting and running computers, which normally earns better margins than building roads or refineries.

Who may gain

  • Makers of heavy electrical equipment - transformers, switchgear and power distribution - such as CG Power and Hitachi Energy India, because a site running 10,000 high-power chips needs an enormous and very reliable electricity supply.
  • Suppliers of large-scale cooling systems such as Blue Star, because chips of this class throw off far more heat than ordinary servers.
  • Listed engineering and construction peers, which get a sentiment lift as investors decide data centres are the next big Indian order pool.

Along the supply chain

Downstream

The customer is Together AI, a US cloud company, so the finished output - rented AI computing power - is sold outside India. Indian AI developers and startups gain access to more domestic computing capacity, which lowers their costs but also means India's existing GPU-rental providers face a new, larger rival.

Upstream

L&T must now buy from Indian electrical and cooling equipment makers - transformers and switchgear from firms like CG Power and Hitachi Energy India, large cooling systems from firms like Blue Star, and power cables from its existing listed suppliers Polycab, Apar Industries and Salzer Electronics. Orders of this type are typically placed over the following two to three quarters and delivered over four to six.

Where demand moves

Business

A US cloud company has moved a large block of AI computing demand into India rather than building it itself. That demand flows first to L&T, which must now buy transformers, switchgear, cabling, cooling equipment and grid connections from Indian electrical-equipment makers over the next four to six quarters. It flows away from India's existing GPU-rental providers - chiefly E2E Networks - because a much larger, better-funded competitor is about to add supply that competes for the same Indian AI customers.

Capital

Money is likely to rotate within engineering and construction towards companies with a visible data-centre order story, and away from small pure-play GPU-cloud stocks whose scarcity value has just been reduced. Some investors who own L&T only as an infrastructure proxy may re-rate it towards a technology-infrastructure multiple, which is what makes the valuation question important.

How it spreads across sectors

Capital Goods

Transformer, switchgear and cooling makers gain a fresh, high-value order category.

Construction

L&T proves a new, higher-margin revenue line beyond roads and refineries, and every listed engineering firm's data-centre pipeline gets re-examined.

Information Technology

India's AI computing capacity expands sharply, which is good for AI software users but competitive for existing GPU-rental providers.

Power

A single site of this size adds tens of megawatts of round-the-clock electricity demand in Tamil Nadu, which is positive for generators and grid operators there.

Realty

Data-centre land and shell demand in Chennai firms up.

When it plays out

Immediate

Expect L&T to open higher on the order announcement and for data-centre-linked electrical and cooling names to see sympathy buying. History from L&T's own three previous ultra-mega order wins says the first-day move is between +0.4% and +4.9% and much of it is given back within a month, so the initial pop is often the best price.

Medium term

Over one to six months the key questions are whether L&T signs a second AI-factory customer, whether it needs to raise capital for the build, and whether India's GPU-rental prices start falling as this and other capacity comes online. If rental prices fall, the small listed GPU-cloud companies are the first to feel it.

Short term

Over one to four weeks the market will focus on the economics: what margin L&T earns on hosting, how much capital it must put in, and whether Together AI has committed to a multi-year contract. L&T's next quarterly order-inflow disclosure is the first real checkpoint. Sub-contract awards to electrical and cooling suppliers should start becoming visible.
