Demerger
The company splits itself into two or more separate companies. If you hold shares, you usually end up holding shares in both pieces instead of one combined business.
Example
A group with a cement arm and a hotels arm may split them so each can be valued and run on its own.
Worth knowing
Neither good nor bad on its own. Splitting can reveal value that was hidden inside a conglomerate, or it can just move the same business into a different envelope.
