Answers

Simple answers to the questions investors ask most, from the company's own numbers.

How fast it has been growing

Our sales figures for this company step up at Mar 2013 and we hold nothing that says why, so we cannot honestly quote a growth rate across it.

Whether it grew faster than its sector

Our sales figures for this company step up at Mar 2013 and we hold nothing that says why, so there is no honest growth rate of its own to set against its sector.

Room to re-rate, or risk of de-rating

It has no earnings, so there is no price-to-earnings to compare.

Whether growth justifies the valuation

It has no earnings to weigh the price against.

Compared with companies filed under the same label. That grouping comes from the exchange's filing category, so some of them may not be real rivals.

How it compares with its peers

Against companies the exchange files under the same label (Housing Finance Company), it ranks 14 of 14 on returns, 13 of 14 on growth. That grouping comes from the exchange's filing category, so some of them may not be real rivals.

What makes it hard to beat — and is that still true?

It is losing money on the capital in the business, so there is no advantage to measure.

Whether its growth pays for itself

This question does not fit a lender: the money it lends out is its day-to-day outflow and the deposits or premiums it takes are the inflow, so a cash bridge cannot say whether its growth pays for itself. Look at the return on owners' money instead.

Profit reality check

Is the profit real cash? Simple checks on the accounts. Facts only, not advice.

Not enough filed accounts to run these checks yet.

Supreme Court orders a CBI probe into alleged financial irregularities at Indiabulls Housing Finance, now Sammaan Capital, regardless of the EOW's report

India's top court told the federal police to investigate all six allegations of fund siphoning against the former promoters of Indiabulls Housing Finance, now called Sammaan Capital - a company-specific overhang that past episodes show does not spread to other housing lenders.

Financial ServicesRealty

Who it hits first

  • Sammaan Capital, the renamed Indiabulls Housing Finance, faces a court-directed criminal investigation into six separate allegations against its former promoters.
  • The company is already loss-making, so a higher cost of funds has no cushion to absorb it.
  • The former promoters, including Sameer Gehlaut, face personal criminal exposure.
  • The EOW's finding of no direct link is expressly not a shield - the court ordered the probe regardless of it.

Who may gain

  • PNB Housing Finance, which rose 2.09% and 7.40% in the month after the two prior court escalations while the named company fell - the cleanest housing lender in this comparison, with bad loans of just 0.93%.
  • Other well-capitalised housing lenders and banks that pick up borrowers and wholesale funding lines that would otherwise have gone to Sammaan Capital.

Along the supply chain

Downstream

Downstream, its customers are home-loan and developer-loan borrowers. If it cannot fund new lending, those borrowers refinance elsewhere, which is a slow leak of the loan book to PNB Housing, LIC Housing and the banks rather than a sudden event.

Upstream

Sammaan Capital's upstream is its own funding - banks, mutual funds and bond investors. A court-ordered criminal probe is precisely the kind of headline that makes those funders demand a higher spread or reduce lines, and for a loss-making lender that is the binding constraint.

Where demand moves

Business

A lender under criminal investigation finds wholesale funding gets dearer, so it has to slow new lending or lend at rates borrowers will not accept. That home-loan demand does not disappear - it moves to PNB Housing, LIC Housing and the banks, which is why the peers held up or rose in both prior episodes while Sammaan fell.

Capital

Money leaves the named company and, unusually, does not leave the category: in both prior escalations PNB Housing rose while Sammaan fell, so this is a within-sector rotation to the cleanest balance sheet rather than an exit from housing finance. That is the same shape as the SEBI-Zee precedent, where listed media peers rose while the named company fell.

How it spreads across sectors

Financial Services

Company-specific governance overhang; peers historically hold up or gain rather than falling in sympathy.

Realty

Marginally tighter developer funding if one lender pulls back, though the largest developer lenders are unaffected.

Commodity angle

Cc skip reason

no_commodity_link

When it plays out

Immediate

Expect Sammaan Capital to fall in the low single digits, matching the roughly 1.6% day-one moves in both prior escalations, with peers broadly unaffected.

Medium term

The company was already loss-making before this; the probe mainly makes the turnaround harder to fund. The one-month record of -9.09% and -3.41% suggests continued drift rather than a single sharp drop.

Short term

Watch whether the CBI actually registers a First Information Report and whether it names current management as opposed to former promoters - the latter is what would turn this from a legacy issue into an operating one.
